How do you get invited to TED talks?

There are so many people throughout the world with ideas, but not everyone gets to be heard. TED talks have been around for thirty years and serve as a platform for speakers to be heard through their eighteen-minute speeches.

TED talks offer such a variety of topics- from scientists talking about their research, to politicians discussing policy changes, and artists sharing their inspirations. TED is an acronym meaning ‘Technology, Entertainment, Design’ and was originally created in Long Beach California by Richard Saul Wurman and Harry Marks in 1984. Back then the main focus was on technology and design topics; however today they share talks on science, business, global issues, entertainment, media, and much more.

In 2006 Chris Anderson took over as curator of the conferences and moved them into a more organized, global system for everyone to share their ideas with the world. The Mission Statement is “Ideas Worth Spreading.” In order to be eligible to give a talk you must apply and submit your idea or speech, but don’t fret if it doesn’t get picked- TED has been hosting an open application process called ‘TEDx’ since 2009 in which people can attend a local conference and hear great speakers from around the country.

Even though Chris Anderson is now in charge of TED talks he did not start off with this position. He started on this path by working his way up from being a bookseller, which eventually led him to be the director of new media at IDG publishing where he currently held that title until 2005 when it was bought out by TED, leaving him to take over the conference system itself.

It is so great that people have found their voice through giving TED talks because it opens them up to the world while also enlightening others about an idea or cause they might not have ever heard of.
